Less Can Be More exhibit

April 14 through June 11, 2023

In these works of art, our gallery artists distill the natural world into just a few colors, simple shapes, and possibly a line or two. Through reduction their works intensify our vision and create poetry out of bare essential elements.

Sky and ocean are each minimal and sublime.
Spectra of blue, gray, and cyan can be austere while signifying infinity.

Large vistas, few details: our artists make meditative flatlands from a simple patchwork of greens and ochre; create clouds and reflections by leaving untouched paper or canvas; and imply mass and intricacy by withholding details of backlit trees in silhouette.

Cropped compositions magnify elements and large brushes boldly convey essentials.

Eloquent lines, loose brushstrokes, and fluidly applied color bring art to life through gesture and chance. By avoiding explanations, these works give the viewer a world in flux to engage with.
