Why Marcia does not use water based oil paints

Marcia was recently emailed this question:

Q: Marcia, what is your opinion of water based oil paint?

A: Until you asked I wasn’t aware water-mixable oil paints existed!

I gather they are regular oil paints with a hint of surfactant that allows them to be mixed with water rather than a solvent which might cause contact or breathing problems.

They still take days to dry unless you use a quick-drying medium with them, which seems counter to the idea of avoiding solvents.

I found this explanation of their qualities online written by an artist who uses water-based oils:

I use acrylics rather than oils because they dry immediately. My way of painting is based on quickly rendering large areas without worrying too much if those shapes are perfectly drawn. Because acrylic dries in minutes, I can then paint THE NEGATIVE SHAPES that surround what I started with. I find this is a rapid and accurate way to get the shapes I actually see.
Using oils, with or without water, means I’d have to wait days to go ahead with my painting the way I want to do.

For this reason I also do not use slow-drying acrylics. Even though they dry to the touch in a few minutes, they still lift off lower layers many hours later.
